How Parcel simplifies modern JavaScript projects
JavaScript fatigue: a disease that spread during the last years.
Three years ago when we started to learn Angular and other technologies, we had to understand how Babel and Webpack work.
Before getting into a new JS technology, we had to go through a long awkward setup phase, analyzing files like this:
const fs = require('fs');
const path = require('path');
const CopyWebpackPlugin = require('copy-webpack-plugin');
const ProgressPlugin = require('webpack/lib/ProgressPlugin');
const CircularDependencyPlugin = require('circular-dependency-plugin');
const HtmlWebpackPlugin = require('html-webpack-plugin');
const rxPaths = require('rxjs/_esm5/path-mapping');
const autoprefixer = require('autoprefixer');
const postcssUrl = require('postcss-url');
const cssnano = require('cssnano');
const postcssImports = require('postcss-import');
const { NoEmitOnErrorsPlugin, SourceMapDevToolPlugin, NamedModulesPlugin } = require('webpack');
const { NamedLazyChunksWebpackPlugin, BaseHrefWebpackPlugin } =
require('@angular/cli/plugins/webpack');
const { CommonsChunkPlugin } = require('webpack').optimize;
const { AngularCompilerPlugin } = require('@ngtools/webpack');
const nodeModules = path.join(process.cwd(), 'node_modules');
const realNodeModules = fs.realpathSync(nodeModules);
const genDirNodeModules = path.join(process.cwd(), 'src', '$$_gendir', 'node_modules');
const entryPoints = ["inline","polyfills","sw-register","styles","vendor","main"];
const minimizeCss = false;
const baseHref = "";
const deployUrl = "";
const projectRoot = process.cwd();
const maximumInlineSize = 10;
const postcssPlugins = function (loader) {
const importantCommentRe = /@preserve|@licen[cs]e|[@#]\s*source(?:Mapping)?URL|^!/i;
const minimizeOptions = {
autoprefixer: false,

This inevitably led to the famous JavaScript fatigue.
We could either understand every option or not touch it (which most likely never happened).
A new savior named Parcel has emerged with the aim to replace the current king: Webpack!
In this tutorial, we will see how we can use a non standard file in a Parcel project.
If you have seen this tutorial on Ionic 4 and Vue, you know all the necessary steps to enable the use of Vue SFCs.
If you are not very familiar with Vue SFCs (Single File Components), those are files that contain everything inside (HTML, JS and CSS).
We will do the same with Parcel to see the difference.
Some installations
We start by cloning a Parcel starter project:
git clone https://github.com/davidvenin/parcel-starter.git
We install the libraries listed in the package.json file:
yarn install
And add the Vue library:
yarn add vue
We need a recent Vue compiler otherwise we will have the following issue:
yarn add --dev @vue/[email protected]
We can try to:
yarn start
If TypeScript is an issue:
yarn global add typescript
From there, the rest is pretty straightforward.
We start by adding the app id to the index.html file so Vue can render there:
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="ie=edge">
<title>Parcel with Vue SFC</title>
</head>
<body>
<!-- content -->
<div id="app"></div>
<!-- end content -->
<script src="index.js"></script>
</body>
</html>
As you can see, there is only one dead simple import: index.js!
We move to this file to boostrap the root Vue instance:
import Vue from "vue";
import App from './App.vue';
new Vue({
el: '#app',
render: h => h(App)
});
We import the vue library and the App.vue file.
Then we create the root Vue instance and attach it to the app id.
The App.vue file contains the famous Vue SFC that we aim to use.
Which is as follow:
<!-- ./src/App.vue -->
<template>
<h1>
Our Vue app is running {{status}}!
</h1>
</template>
<script>
export default {
name: 'app',
data () {
return {
status: 'well'
}
}
}
</script>
<style>
h1 {
text-align: center;
font-size: 300%;
}
</style>
And that's it!
Our application is running with Parcel and Vue:
Conclusion
Parcel is great.
According to their website, the performances are least two times better than Webpack.
Configuration wise, it's a no-brainer, when we need something new, we yarn add the corresponding library and it's working out of the box.
However, there aren't only good points. We had to install a recent version of the Vue compiler in order to make it work. Some libraries might have some compatibility issues to fix before being Parcel-ready.
In the long run, this bundler will ease the learning curve of learning new technologies, no more ng eject or npm run eject to go through 1000 lines of code for a simple modification, which is a big plus for the JavaScript ecosystem!
